Sue and Den have lived in Harrow for over 20 years but have only recently realised the great potential for improving health, fitness and well-being by exercising outdoors in them.
Sue and her family have always been involved in Sports and Physical fitness - for the sense of achievement and well-being as well as fitness and fun. She was a keen netball and tennis player, but after two ruptured achilles tendons and the beginnings of arthritis in her knees, Nordic walking fitted the need to keep exercising and be outdoors at the same time.
Originally trained as a head of Biology, Sue then qualified as a counsellor and coach and spent many years supporting young people with social emotional and mental health difficulties in schools. With more time on her hands now, Sue discovered Nordic walking and the joys of exercising outdoors whilst making new friends and connections in the community.
She trained as a Nordic walking instructor to be able to share this new found passion with others in the Harrow Community and looks forward to you joining her on one of her regular walks.
Den has had a long career in corporate project management, working for Blue - Chip FTSE 100 companies over the last 30 years. He has always had a passion for being involved with his local communities and has taken on a range of high level voluntary roles. After being a Parent Governor of our local primary school he was Chair of The Borough of Harrow swimming club for 8 years including 4 years on Governeing London Board of the Amateur Swimming Association. In 2010 Den suffered heart failure and was simultaneously diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. The journey back to health and fitness has been slow and steady with many lifestyle changes. One of these was to get more physical exercise and he has undertaken The BHF London to Brighton Cycle ride 3 times. Den become the Chair of the Harrow CSPAN Board and spent 6 years supporting the development of borough wide health and physical programmes across Harrows population - including the introduction of Green Gyms across the 26 borough parks.
Through Sue he has discovered Nordic walking, an activity they enjoy together and he brings his passion to share his story and the lessons he has learned with others to Harrow Striders.
One of these was the need to get more physical exercise and he has undertaken the London to Brighton cycle rider twice.
